The valuable artefact is a previous university assessment task and the intent of this task was to produce a Newsletter written to parents, carers and the community. Through this, it shows how I have attained the focus area of (7.3.1) Engage with parents and carers: understanding strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers (AITSL, 2017).

 

Through this artefact, I was given the opportunity to communicate between families, the school and the wider community, which assists to improve their involvement in the school, as well as their child’s learning (Goodail, & Vorhaus, 2010). As a result, creating and maintaining effective communication between parents and the teacher is utmost importance to my personal and professional values (Goodail, & Vorhaus, 2010). The newsletter format assists parents to become involved, understand what their child is working towards; in the case of this newsletter it outlines information on the ‘Sacraments’ (Department of Education, 2020).  Therefore, fosters a balance between the home and school life as it encourages parents to be involved in the school activities occurring at the school (Maury, 2014). This assessment encouraged me to give a glimpse into the daily life of the school to prospective, current and past parents showing them what the school would look like or had looked while their child is enrolled (Independent School Management, 2015). It also enabled me to demonstrate the school’s values and ethos through the featured content.

 

Writing this newsletter, I noticed how important it is for schools to have a commitment to parents and continue to work together. Principals and teachers need to value parental involvement while recognising the significant role that parents play. This newsletter is beneficial as it provides parents and the wider community a useful source of information and reminders on upcoming events, invitations and schedules.  When I become a teacher in the future, I believe that even though there are multiple tools and methods to communicate with parents, the school newsletter remains significant and has evolved into a beneficial tool to connect and support the community. I will connect with families that have english as a second language  by sending home a newsletter that is in their home language. This becomes a more effective way to connect with these families and builds a stronger relationship and a sense of belonging.
